Introducing The Omega De Ville Trésor 125th Anniversary Edition

With 2019 marking the all-important 50th anniversary of the Moon landing and the Speedmaster's trip to the lunar surface, the fact that Omega is also celebrating its 125th anniversary has sort of gotten lost in the mix. Well, no more. Today Omega has announced a few special watches to mark its first century-and-a-quarter, including this stunning three-hander, the De Ville Trésor 125th Anniversary Edition. The watch starts out simply enough with a 40mm case in yellow gold but quickly becomes much more sumptuous from there – the dial and strap are both a rich burgundy red color that feels very appropriate for a celebratory watch like this. Matching that is a red enamel medallion on the solid caseback that has a very fin de siècle vibe about it, surrounded by an engraved pattern called damaskeening that Omega used on 19-ligne movements way back in the day. Under that caseback is the all new caliber 8929, the very first manually wound METAS-certified master chronometer movement from Omega (with the co-axial escapement, of course).

Initial Thoughts

Yellow gold and red isn't a color combination that I would expect to like very much, but I have to admit I think it looks rather incredible here. Everything about this watch unabashedly oozes luxury – if Omega were to say that the watch came in a velvet box I wouldn't be surprised one bit (fyi, it does not). Because the basic silhouette is so simple, I'd expect that the details are what's really going to make the difference here, so I'm excited to get my hands on one of these soon enough to check out the dial finishing, the way the hour markers curve with the lines of the case, and the enamel detailing on the caseback. Part of me is bummed that you can't admire the incredible caliber through a sapphire window, but I ultimately applaud the choice of a solid, decorated caseback, which is both a nice throwback in general and a faithful homage to Omega's history of incredible casebacks. Along those lines, I'm also thrilled that Omega opted for a manually-wound caliber here. Without it the watch would still be plenty good, but for me that takes it to the next level.
